What type of Graphic Design do you do? (Discussion)

RLLillis saidWed, 05 Mar 2008 05:16:10 -0000 ( Link )

I have done – book covers – CD cases – Brochures – Posters – Postcards – Fliers – Flash-based and HTML Web sites

I have to admit I mostly use inDesign and do not do a ton of hand Illustration. My strengths are layout, flow and color, not drawing or illustration.

What are your strengths? What program do you use the most for your work? What type of projects do you do?

My strengths definitely lie in the illustration area. I use to do a lot of layout & covers but they were never that great…

I’ve done digital matte painting for feature films, illustration (children’s books, comics, etc.), web design implementation, corporate identity development/promotion, advertising, covers (DVD, CD, Magazine, book) and probably some other junk that has slipped my mind.

I work primarily in Photoshop and Illustrator for visuals, Dreamweaver for web, and sometimes 3D Studio MAX for basic geometry and lighting setups for mattes.

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of brand development (logo design, business cards, web, advertising, custom typography, etc…) but am still doing some concept work / digital painting for film via freelance request(s). Art is quite literally my life. :)

Posters and flyers for local events and web based design.

I would love to learn logo design and more marketing orientated design.

I have done a lot of web design work, logo creation, branding design. These days working on eLearning graphics and designing. Working on User eXperience design solutions and creating a lot of layouts and animated eLearning content.

Most of the times I use Flash, photoshop for elearning projects. For web and other solutions I have used Dreamweaver, photoshop, CorelDraw, Illustrator…

These days I am more focused to work on and learn Usability design solutions and UX strategies. Learner focused design solutions for education industry.

Print for identities, (logos, stationary, business cards) and some advertising (a poster and promotional materials), some wayfinding and signage stuff mostly 2 or 3 color designs that were cut out of vinyl. I designed and built a sign out of stainless steel when I was working as a fabricator, that was pretty fun although stainless is a bit of a PITA to work with.

These days it’s markup and style sheets, I use Photoshop and Illustrator accordingly and should probably make more comps, but I often find myself sketching things out roughly and then going direct to markup. I would consider my text editor (TextMate) a design tool, and it is by far the tool I use most.

I just finished my final designs on a set of business cards for my personal training company as well as matching program and document templates. I’ve also done some t-shirts and advertisements for various reasons. I prefer to work with photoshop for the most part. I don’t do anything too challenging really.

I’ve designed an album cover-once. I did some photography for a book produced by a mathmatics consultant. I designed web pages. And I’ve been a sign painter,(yuck.) I’m old so my tools are traditional drawing, painting, photography. I had a student version of photoshop that I used for the web pages on an old computer. I’m poor too, so now I don’t have any of that stuff. But, I enjoy art and graphic design, and I’m glad you young people are so talented!
